First Printing (Jan. 1984): 150 copies
Second Printing (Feb. 1984): 20 copies
Third (Starhead) Printing: 70 copies
The OUTSIDE IN series of artist self-portraits is classic. Note that there are three printings of this issue. The First Printing (STEVE WILLIS) is on card stock and is the most common. The Second Printing (also STEVE WILLIS) was poorly distributed. While it is also on card stock it can be distinguished from the First Printing by faint paste-up shadows (as a result of poor quality photocopying). The Third Printing is dated 2/84 and carries the Starhead logo on the inside front cover. It is printed on regular paper. At least one uncut copy of the rare Second Printing also exists. Contributors:
cover MARK COUNTS (untitled drawing)
page 2 (hand-lettered indicia and contents)
page 3 MARY LAMBRIGHT (untitled drawing)
page 4 MAGGIE RESCH (Why does life have to be so serious?)
page 5 MICHAEL RODEN (untitled drawing)
page 6 JOE ZABEL (untitled drawing)
page 7 ROMAN SCOTT (untitled drawing)
page 8 DAVE PATTERSON (C’mon Captain Gizmo …)
The MICHAEL RODEN contribution is a carefully drawn self-portrait originally intended as the cover of THE BLACK BOOK.
