This is an interesting book. From the unusual covers (80 lb. Green Leather Grain) to the incredible feature story (The Living Land) to the wonderfully crafted collages of Lost Secrets, this is a highly imaginative and beautifully crafted book. Interestingly, this title was originally intended to be published in a far different (and I suspect far less impressive) format. According to a prepublication report (HAUNTED CATACOMBS First Issue, page 8):

I’ve finished ‘MONSTER COMIX”, which is part of a mini-comix series waiting for printing by Artie Romero’s Everyman Studios. They’re small in size, with 4 color covers and 12 pages (reduced 50% each!).

Five years later, MR had this to offer:

The Monster Comix ideas discussed in Haunted Catacombs were before I actually settled on a format to print it in. I decided to go with the special leather-like paper instead because of two reasons: (A) It wasn’t a big enough deal to merit a color cover. (B) I had never used a novelty paper. Originally Artie Romero wanted to print the comix as a mini-comix with color covers. But his publishing fell apart about then.

Cool multi-eyed monster rising out of a swamp. This drawing is a detail (with additional shading) of the last panel on page 3 of this book.

pages 2-11     The living Land

Interesting cosmic monster epic that is made up of six brief interconnected chapters. Wonderfully imaginative script and great art make this a top-notch story.

Mysterious collage story reprinted from OWLFLIGHT No. 1 (pages 37-40).

page 16 (= back cover)     untitled collage-drawing

Spooky graveyard scene with haunted house.
