David Pugh

 

DAVID PUGH  lives in Chester UK where he continues to work in marine science and consultancy.

Following a Ph.D. in geodesy and geophysics from theUniversity of Cambridge in 1968 he worked at the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, Merseyside. In 1984 he became Head of Oceanography, Hydrology and Meteorology, Science Division,NERC. He has also served as Head of Information and Scientific Services in the former Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (1987-1992) and as Secretary to the United Kingdom Government Committee on Marine Science and Technology (1992-2003).

Elected President of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO,  2003-2007, he had previously been the Founding Chairman of the IOC Global Sea Level network, GLOSS. In addition to leading and serving many international organisations within the UN and ICSU, David Pugh has maintained an active program of research associated with Liverpool University and the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory. His interests include tides, surges, mean sea level, coastal management and climate change, the economics of marine activities related to GDP, and the history of sea level

Awards include Fellowships of the Institute of Physics, the International Association of Geodesy, and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology; and a 2009 Shackleton Memorial Scholarship. He has been a Trustee and Council member of the IMarEST and the Marine Conservation Society. In the 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honours he was awarded an OBE for services to marine sciences. Dr Pugh is the author of Tides, Surges and Mean Sea Level (1996) and Changing Sea Levels (2004). His recent work iincludes "Socio-economic indicators of marine related activities in the UK Economy" published by The Crown Estates in June 2008.

He is currently working (with Geoff Holland) editing and writing for a book on "Oceans, science and governments" for IOC/UNESCO, to be published in 2010. Work on sea levels iin the Falklands with Philip Woodworth (Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory), is also in preparation.
