  • Caption: I had some free time on Sunday afternoon, so I did some exploring west of Cortez, along the Colorado-Utah state line. The tower in the background is part of Horseshoe Ruin, one of the outliers at Hovenweep National Monument. Archeologists have dated these ruins to the thirteenth century, using tree ring dating. Trees grow a different amount each year, depending on rainfall and climate. By analyzing tree rings, archeologists have created a record going back hundreds of years. This enables them to take samples from tree branches used in the construction of ruins and very accurately date them.
