What happened to Tucker?

Just when you think you know a guy. Tucker Carlson, the preppy bow-tied right-winger on CNN's shoutfest CrossFire is now going to have his own show.... on PBS.

Whaaaa?

Now I've heard everything. I thought he was one of those Republicans who hated public broadcasting and thought of it as a liberal swamp.

Boy, was I wrong. Carlson (who I got to meet at NAB last month -- and found to be very friendly and charming) is actually against the war. Who knew? (Not me, since I stopped watching Crossfire months ago.)

The New York Observer says "he's still a staunch conservative?he's anti-abortion, married with four kids" but he has "changed his mind about the war in Iraq."

Said Carlson: "I think it?s a total nightmare and disaster, and I'm ashamed that I went against my own instincts in supporting it. It's something I'll never do again. Never. I got convinced by a friend of mine who?s smarter than I am, and I shouldn't have done that. No. I want things to work out, but I'm enraged by it, actually."

He may also be hedging his bets. President Bush's approval rating has now sunk to 46 percent. According to the Washington Post, no president since World War II has won reelection after falling below 50 percent approval in Gallup polls at this point in an election year.
