Newspaper publishers are wringing their hands these days because of changing technology. One concern is what to do about the "thumb generation" -- that is people who text message. Publishers are concerned that people are getting their news from text messaging, cell phones, PDAs and the like.
I had a similar concern -- what do to about students that text message while they're in class. (I kicked one student out last semester for doing that.)
Newspapers should be concerned -- especially when they can't deliver the newspaper on time and insist on throwing it on my lawn where the sprinklers soak it. (Not mentioning any names -- Deseret News!)
The other conundrum is what to do with online content. Reuters and the AP are wrestling with models that will help them from losing revenue and brand equity. (See Mark Glasser's story via OJR). |
