Carole Simpson's new job

Carole Simpson has a new job. She still works for ABC News, but in the most unusual gig: as an "ambassador" to school children. It's an admirable idea, actually. Television news executives have been wringing their hands over the fact that few young people watch television news. So, they've sent Ms. Simpson to go talk to kids.

One has to wonder, though, if this is some kind of made up job designed to get rid of her. Last October, the network yanked the 63 year-old from the anchor chair of World News Tonight Sunday, replacing her with 41 year-old Elizabeth Vargas.

The move was tough for Simpson. "There was anger, bitterness, crying, and sadness," she told the Boston Globe. "And eventually acceptance. . . . I'm resigned to my new job, and I'm totally into it now."

Nevertheless, Simpson says "It isn't the ABC News it was when I started."

"We've moved away from stories about poor people, people who are powerless," she said. "The focus groups have indicated that the public wants medical and business news."

Simpson returns to reporting for ABC News soon -- once school children are home for the summer.
