I've not been the only American to visit here. Earlier this week, President Clinton wowed Torontonians in a brief book signing visit. Thousands lined up overnight outside the Indigo-Chapters bookstore on Bloor Street. I was briefly tempted to line up, too, but I don't do well in academic meetings without a full night of sleep. Not as many snickers about Monica here. If Canadians ever cared, they seem to have forgiven him. People interviewed by local television spoke of Clinton's intellect and voiced the approval of his foreign policy. Many were quick to add their disapproval of the current U.S. foreign policy. Clinton's famous gregariousness -- eye contact and hugs included -- only seems to have solidified his place in the hearts of many here. Not coincidentally, I've yet to meet one Canadian on this trip who approves of President George W. Bush. But, then....I'll see my brothers over the weekend in Pembrooke, Ontario.
The other big visit was that of singer John Mayer. He played at Sam The Record Man, which just happened to be near my hotel. Hundreds of people -- most of whom appeared to be students of nearby Reiyerson University -- crowded in and around the store. Those who could not see him could hear him singing and whispering sweet nothings to his adoring female fans.
