Grade inflation
Date Created:04/30/04 07:11 AM

It's that time of year.... I just submitted my grades for BYU's winter semester this week and already I've got students upset with their grades. We're not talking being upset with Cs or Ds. It's the students who get a B or even an A minus. Anything less than an A is unacceptable for many of my students. It's apparently part of a nationwide trend. This week, Princeton University faculty voted to encourage its faculty to accept an anti grade inflation plan, limiting A grades to 35 percent of the class. Several weeks ago, faculty in our department again voiced concern about grade inflation. So far, the issue is not being taken up as a policy issue -- but it would not surprise me to see a policy surface in the near future.

Luckily, it does not appear that we at BYU have to deal with students cheating as often faculty at other schools. If last night's ABC News report on cheating is to believed, the practice is rampant.
