Admiral - Alki Planning
| |
|
The five kiosks at the northern end of the West Seattle peninsula are part of the West Seattle Trails and Wayfinding Project's Phase Two. These five kiosks, two at the top of the Admiral neighborhood, and three along the shoreline in the Alki neighborhood, will speak to each other as well as to the history, culture and surrounding geography and topography. The map at the top shows five turqoise pentagons where the two Admiral and three Alki kiosks will be sited. The location of the kiosks had previously been identified through resident surveys and workshops. The recommended locations are only "vicinities" at this point and the actual siting of each kiosk has to be determined. The locations are in the vicinity of: The Admiral kiosks portion of Phase Two began in early December with a series of meetings among Admiral residents where content for the two kiosks were discussed and recommendations for a theme and photographs were made. The two images below show the collection of concepts for the Belevedere kiosk and for the Admiral Junction kiosk. Additional research is needed to fill in some of the areas suggested by the team and a graphic concept for the kiosk back side needs to be developed. Artwork for the bottom of both kiosks is also an element which will need to be developed at future meetings with the Admiral team.

The Admiral team also looked at locations between the Admiral kiosks and the Alki kiosks for siting the on-street trail markers, which will look like the image here but which will have blade markings specific for each of the locations noted. Also, the number of locations, shown in the map on the left with small dark colored triangles, needs to be pared down to about half. This work needs to be done in concert with the Alki team as both sets of kiosks (Admiral and Alki) relate to each other from the perspective of "up the hill" and "down at the shore." The location of these five kiosks is at the natural gathering place for many of the West Seattle Trails in this northern end of the peninsula. The on-street markers direct folks from one to the other via the directional blades as shown in the image below.![]() |

Planning for the Alki kiosks and on-street trail markers will begin with a series of meetings scheduled for early January 2010. Notice of these meetings will be posted to the West Seattle Herald and to the West Seattle Blog and requests will be made of both the Admiral Neighborhood Association and the Alki Community Council to use their membership lists to help notify residents of the upcoming Alki meetings and the continuation of the on-going Admiral meetings. | |
