walking in Athens North Oconee On a beautiful, sunny and warm day, January 6th, 2008 I went for a wandering trip on a natural and historic trail in Athens: North Oconee Trail.

athens map showing trip to trail trip from my house to trail my north oconee trail trip I started at my favorite breakfast place-The Bluebird Cafe New Hilton Hotel across from Civic Center next block from Bluebird walked by the north of the Athens Civic Center spot of a new condo in future walking towards Foundry street where many artist shops have been sample shop walking behind Civic Center on Foundry street still walking behind Civic Center parking deck behind Civic Center view from civic center parking deck to the east walkway to the eastern parking deck Banner-Herald Civic Center-Panorama new condo by railroad track beyond Foundry (3 buildings look alike downtown) older part of Broad Street on "other side of the tracks" a new coffee shop one of the popular students for new bands and artists WEAVER DEE'S made famous by REM band from Athens Weaver D's sign once stolen by REM fan and returned first sign of Oconee Trail design features first bridge I found across the North Oconee River bridge looking east North Oconee River to the South bridge looking west stepped back view of bridge view of North Oconee to north Chicopee Plant were double barrel canon was made the brige to the west and downtown another Trail Design feature Civil War Factory and one of the first mills entrance to the Chicopee building the beginning of the monuments to the mill industry that started Athens the millstone monument a sample mill stone part of the trail the beginning of the trail monumental sign the trail begins the river very old trellis structure
