Know Your Mac!
MacFixIt reader David Schmitt reminds us of a tip for
improving PowerBook G4 Titanium AirPort reception (in some cases dramatically),
that was originally recommended by Apple's technical support team, and later
filtered through Apple's online discussion boards.
"As the owner of a PowerBook G4/550, I was becoming increasingly dismayed
by my Airport reception. These Titanium PowerBooks are notorious for
less-than-stellar reception, but in my case I was finding that my reception was
getting progressively worse. For example, I couldn't get reception in my
upstairs bedroom where previously it worked fine.
"Today I stumbled upon a year-old web discussion board that mentioned a
tip: shut down the laptop, pull out the battery, and with your fingers press
the side of the battery compartment behind the airport antenna
"window". Press in several places, for about 10 seconds. With nothing
to lose, I tried it, and lo and behold it works! My reception is better than
ever."
If you've tried this tip with success, or have any other suggestions, please
drop us a line at late-breakers@macfixit.com .
Sobig.F virus
and Mac OS X
This thread discusses problems
that can be caused on Macs by the Sobig.F virus, and also details the reasons
why systems running Mac OS X are less prone to virus attacks. One poster writes
"SoBig variants are Windows viruses incapable of infecting Macs unless
you're emulating Windows. However, you can still receive tons of this critter,
and at about 100K a pop this may cause problems all its own, including delays
and exceeded mail quotas."
Possible
Safari fix for misbehaving websites

I enabled the debug menu in safari using a hint I found here
about a week or so ago.
I frequently visit some site that are aware that they do not fully function
with Safari for some reason or another. Most of these sites involve
shopping carts or other assets management functions. One example would be
Photospin.com -- if you have an account, you would not be able to download
anything using Safari. Your account would think you were not logged in any more
once you left the original login page. If you would try to log back in, it
would tell you your account was in use. This never happens when using Opera or
Internet Explorer.
Well today I got to fiddling around in the debug menu and changed my user agent
from "Automatically Chosen" to "Mac MSIE 5.22" -- and it
worked. My misbehaving websites all function properly now. What I
have noticed is that this seems to work on a site by site basis. I am
using four tabs right now, and am able to set a different user agent to each
one.
