A Bite from the Apple:

Know Your Mac!

Command-Shift-4... Not your fathers screen shot any more!!

In Jaguar you can use the user selectable mode (command-shift-4) to do your screen shots.

You use the space bar to toggle between the regular (+) selection mode and the new mode to capture just a single window, the Dock or the menu bar (how cool is that !!)

Your cursor will change to a camera icon when you have invoked this new mode and as you move your mouse  over different areas of your desktop the target area is highlighted.

Enjoy!

iTunes 4: How to Edit Song Information Simple and Fast

OSXFAQ Reader Tip By Carlos Guido

Editing song information

When you're connected to the Internet, you can retrieve information about the songs on a CD from the CDDB (CD database) on the Internet. You can also enter song information into iTunes yourself, or change the information that was retrieved.

But in version 4, you put the cursor over the song (in Browse Mode) and edit the SONG info directly,

Simplest and Fast.

Eliminating a duplicate Users folder in Mac OS X

A problem with duplicate "Users" folders appearing in the top directory in Mac OS X. There are a few simple steps you can take to analyze this problem, and resolve it.

Go to the terminal and type the command "ls -li" at the top level. If the second User folder shows up here, check the type and inode numbers. If both are actual directories with the same inode number, the file system has a problem -- rebooting from the CD and running Disk First Aid may fix it.  If not, then reboot in single-user console mode, and use the fsck command to fix it:  "fsck -y" should do the trick.

Troubleshooting the iSight: Moving to another FireWire bridge to eliminate interference

Noted problems with the iSight interfering with the operation of other FireWire devices. One of the devices most susceptible to this problem is the iPod. For some users, when the iSight is connected and capturing video, their iPod disappears from the Desktop and from the iTunes playlist, while the iPod status screen cycles from the Apple logo to a "Do not Disconnect" message over and over.

MacFixIt reader Cathy Rudolph offers the suggestion of adding a new FireWire interface PCI card and connecting the iSight to its own separate bridge.

"I experienced interference problems with the iSight and an Ecrix tape drive. The solution I came up with was to add a PCI FW card (Adaptec) to my G4 533 DP so that the tape drive is on a separate bank of FireWire ports. Now I can use my tape drive and have the iSight plugged in all the time."

"While this doesn't answer the question of why there's an incompatibility between the tape drive and the iSight, it does allow me to have all the devices plugged in and ready to use, and will minimize the wear and tear on the FW connectors and cables."
