Fifth Column Media

Hey there listeners...watch out for the po-po!

I was sitting, waiting, at the barbershop is morning, when I caught an interesting piece in the local paper.

Now it is bad enough when local authorities announce that they won't help enforce immigration laws, making the job of federal officers harder. But you rarely hear about instances of the media actively working to thwart the efforts of our immigration agencies (outside of the generally biased reporting that we all know and love).

But here in San Antonio we have an instance of a Spanish-language radio station that may be warning its listeners to the movements of Border Patrol agents, based on tips phoned in by other listeners.
A recurring segment started five years ago by KROM-Radio "Estéreo Latino" involves people calling in to report sightings of immigration agents in the city. The station's disc jockeys then alert listeners, particularly undocumented immigrants, to steer clear of the named locations.

No actual mention of federal agents is made — DJs speak of limones verdes , or "green limes," a euphemistic reference to Border Patrol agents, who traditionally don olive-green uniforms and drive green-lined SUVs.
I suppose that we shouldn't be surprised, since historically immigrant communities tend to be insular and act to 'protect' themselves. But that doesn't mean there shouldn't be consequences. In this case, radio stations only broadcast under the good graces of the Federal Communications Commission. So be warned....aiding & abetting the actions of those who are breaking federal law may help you lose your FCC license.
