Murtha's Unmitigated crap
A 'broken' analysis leads his 'foot to
mouth'....
Who knows what motivated Congressman Murtha to
continue down a fools road and claim that the Army is "broken" and is only
existing "hand to mouth". There are many arguments and examples to counter this
idiocy to be found in plain view, but none better or more concise than that from
fellow FGO, Major Dave, in 'An Army
Broken?'
Unmitigated crap. And I don't say this out of defensiveness or service pride - I'll tell you about how far we have had to come in a bit. First, though, a little material for you to mull over.
The US Army is quite open about how it works, what it sees for its future, what it has been told to do in the future by the civilian authorities we serve. You can see its budget, strength, recruiting, retention, doctrine and philosophy. And not just official sources. US Army Soldiers tell the world about things that go right and wrong . Also, what we do on our own. We are our own strongest critics and staunchest defenders.
What really infuriates me is that someone like Rep. Murtha knows better . Ask any veteran who served between 1975-1982/3 what the Army (or the rest of the Armed Forces for that matter) were like. Drugs everywhere, low pay, morale was non-existent, equipment was falling behind or scarce, there was no great sense of mission or purpose . Only the heroic measures of a few dedicated officers and NCOs saved us from absolutely bottoming out.
The more Murtha speaks the more he makes
evident his foolishness. Like Major John points out, he should know better. He
is the Ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense for crying
out loud. Perhaps that might hint at
answer to what Murtha's motivation is. Maybe he is concerned that the Army is
spending too much on operations in Iraq, and not enough on his precious
appropriations. especially those that might
go to his own district or some of the many 'friends' he
has made while a member of one of the most powerful committees in the House.
UPDATE: Another blogging Army officer
points out that words have consequences, and that Murtha's words may end up
having serious consequences. Bulgaria
and Ukraine will begin withdrawing their combined 1,250 troops by
mid-December.
