The mission of the BCCCS Music Program is to inspire all students to press toward excellence and creative confidence in music in order to become independent, thoughtful members of their community. This curriculum is designed as a sequential process based largely on the Kodaly system of musical learning. The concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony and form are developed sequentially. Continuous refinement of skills through singing and playing of instruments is the essential goal of the elementary music program. Students will be provided with knowledge and skills in music to develop a broad-based, well-grounded understanding of the nature, value and meaning of music and its important role in the human experience.
Kindergarten -Match pitches (tones) -Keep a steady beat -Distinguish tempo, pitch, and dynamics by listening -Experience creative movement through action songs and singing games -Begin to develop the enjoyment and love of music through singing and playing instruments -Read and perform quarter and eighth note rhythms
First Grade -Develop the enjoyment and love of music through singing and playing instruments -Perform steady beat and simple rhythms consisting of quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests on classroom instruments -Recognize repetition and contrast in music -Experience musical concepts by playing instruments and song games -Develop a repertoire of traditional folk songs -Create and perform simple ostinatos
Second Grade -Develop the enjoyment and love of music through singing and playing instruments -Recognize, play and sing melodic patterns using the pentatonic scale (Do, Re, Mi, Sol, La) -Perform rhythms that include half notes, half rests, whole notes, and whole rests -Demonstrate awareness of bar lines and meter (duple/triple) -Experience musical concepts by playing instruments and song games -Develop a repertoire of traditional folk songs -Demonstrate recognition of two and three part form (AB/ABA)
Third Grade -Recognize and sing melodic patterns -Perform rhythms that include dotted half notes -Demonstrate awareness of treble clef and note names on the staff -Perform echo and round singing and playing -Experience musical concepts by playing instruments and song games -Develop a repertoire of traditional folk songs -Awareness of triple and compound meter -Compose and perform rhythmic and melodic ostinatos -Identify the instruments of the orchestra
Fourth Grade -Recognize and sing a major scale -Aurally recognize the difference between major and minor -Read and perform rhythms that included dotted notes and syncopation -Identify duple, triple and compound meters -Identify notes on the staff (treble clef) -Identify terms of musical expression -Identify instruments of the band -Compose and perform more advanced rhythmic and melodic ostinatos
Fifth Grade -learn about European composers -Accompany songs using I and V chords and arpeggios -Awareness of key signature and accidentals -Learn about musical genres (styles) -Read and perform rhythms that include dotted eighth notes -Compose and perform more advanced rhythmic and melodic ostinatos
Sixth Grade -Recognize and identify all the basic terms and symbols learned in grades 1-5 -Awareness of vocal ranges -Learn about Opera -Learn about American Composers -Learn about popular music styles -Demonstrate improvisational skills
Seventh Grade -Recognize and identify all the basic terms and symbols learned in previous grades -Learn about the role of music in culture and history -Recognize vocal changes and abilities -Demonstrate composing and improvisational skills
Eighth Grade -Recognize and identify all the basic terms and symbols learned in previous grades -Awareness of musical eras including medieval, renaissance, baroque, romantic, and modern -Create and perform music in the style of famous composers of various eras -Awareness of styles of American music and famous American musicians -Compose and improvise advances rhythmic and melodic ostinatos, melodies and harmonies -Compose and improvise based on I, IV, V chord progressions
World Music – all grades (at their level) -Recognize the music of various cultures -Recognize similarities and differences between cultures -Awareness of the role of music in other cultures -Locate country of origin on a world map -Experience the music of other cultures through hands on listening, playing, singing and movement activities -Reflect on cultural differences and similarities through journaling
Choir – grades 3-5 -Match pitch -Keep a steady internal beat while singing -Learn the role of a conductor and accompanist -Sing unison, partner, and echo songs
