Confusing but cool

iTunes 7 debuted last night--stupour: aluminium buttons, new scroll-bar buttons, a whole new theme. Not that it hasn’t happended before.

God, VT turns 10 already! Quadras, Performas and Power Macs 7200. Hotline communities, message boards and 14400 modems. Netscape, Altavista and ICQ. How time flies!

Google Analytics

I installed Google Analytics, played with it and now I procrastinate its deinstallation. I much preffer VersionTracker’s (paid version) raw look and barebone efficiency—and the fact that its no-frills html output is easily parsable with UNIX tools.

YouTube

Blogging for the lazy and the clueless now gets easier than ever: just browse YouTube and pick something for your copy-paste blog. And it could get easier even than that, really, you only have to find a sucker to blog for you and -- what do you know! -- effortless blogging.

Finally

After (dark) ages of phone banking only, Raiffeisen finally got their internet banking all set and working. If you're a client you may want to activate it during your next trip to their office. In a decade or so maybe even mighty ING will find out about this internet banking thing and give it a try, who knows.

5% original

It seems that only a dismal 5% of all blogs are producing original content (I suppose the rest of 95% are copy-paste blogs, linkdumps and aggregators) — says a recent study released by The Project for Excellence in Journalism. [via Owlspotting]

Airbag on Dvorak

On Airbag Longboard: "Dvorak thinks Apple will drop MacOS X and adopt Windows. Moron." For a minute there I wondered why everybody uses this word when it comes to Dvorak (including myself, a couple of days ago)? Because it's the best choice, I guess.

Update: Joy of Tech chimes in. Apparently they found a better word: psychiatry. Not bad.

RSS up again

The Net can be a wonderful place sometimes: Ovidiu Roatis fixed my buggy feed from right across the ocean. I don't know him in person and he doesn't know me — we only read each-other's blog. A big THANK YOU goes to the guy in the Big Apple! The first shot of vodka is on me.

Botched RSS

I know my main feed is botched, thanks to iBlog developer who thought that a quick release for the podcasters is more important than a stable release for the rest of us. Stuff the validator throws at me: Your feed appears to be encoded as "UTF-8", but your server is reporting "US-ASCII". Great.

No PSP this time

I walked every single Dixons, Virgin Megastore and HMV on Oxford Street only to face a cruel destiny: no Sony Playstation Portable. "Sold out." "By reservation only." "Are you on the backlog list?" "Would you like to pre-order?"

No PSP. None. Not one!

...And now up again.

Shifting paradigms

I am intrigued by certain dynamics in naming: category denominations shifting meaning. Half a century ago companies named with 'Mobil(e)' were about fuel, today the word marks the territory of those into wireless communications, and in a couple decades the name will shift again, I suppose – to wearable computers tech companies, maybe.

Bridget Jones, the sequel – to be avoided. 'The Edge of Reason' is a surprisingly apt name, after all. Have a nice dinner instead. Soup, cake, something.

Annoying and useless

Bad copy annoys me. But pointless ads – horribly written and executed – are a real pain in the ass, especially when you cannot avoid them. Like the one running in a local mall multiplex cinema advertising (in 3D metal lines of copy)... "buy movie tickets." To a bunch of people who just bought movie tickets in order to see the movie. Idiotic.

Coca-Cola wants to be cool

Cola-Cola Light has here in Romania this sales promotion where lucky buyers can win – among other things – Apple PowerBooks. Imagine that! I guess it's just a random shot at trying to be cool, because I don't see any kind of affinity between the two brands. I'm an Apple zealot to the bone, but even I have doubts that throwing a user onto a different computing platform just like that is such a great idea. They should've go with some Sony VAIOs.
Update: The PowerBooks are advertised as awards on the bottle label, but they're nowhere to be found in the official sales promotion rules. Is this fishy or I'm missing something?

Largest design company on earth

The largest printing house on earth is Tetra Pak. That's a surprise isn't it? Ok, now: do you think you can name the largest design company in the world? No way. It probably is Samsung. They have 470 designers on board. 470!!!

SideTrack

There is software you cannot live without once you are hooked. Such a dirty beast proved to be SideTrack, a System Preferences module that enables your trackpad to be used for scrolling and other things. I didn't give it much thought until this morning, when my beta expired and I found my life to be miserable without it. I couldn't find my credit card fast enough to buy it – I was expecting it to cost around $10, it was $15. If you're a PowerBook or iBook diehard, give it a try. It'll get you hooked before you notice.

IMs harmful

Unlike Tina of Perfectly Imperfect, I didn't decide to stop using IM. It just happened as the end-of-year hysteria with its live-or-die kind of projects kicked in and over my work, and I didn't have much time to open Adium and say 'Hello' around. Once the pain of the forbidden addiction passed, I observed what a time saver reduced IM usage can be.
