Big, big news

Adobe announced definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia

Both Macromedia and Adobe issued press releases today:

SAN JOSE, Calif. - April 18, 2005 - Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) today announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion.

Let's see: Macromedia for the web design market and Adobe for print? Is this the end of Freehand? Well, that wouldn't be too tragic, the latest (MX) release is a horrendous flop.

Big, big news.

Update: At What Do I Know, Todd Dominey voices some of the concerns that float above our heads. The end of his post is truly memorable:

I'm rambling somewhat, but my head is spinning and I had to get this out into words. In the end, all I can say is this -- at least it wasn't Microsoft.

So true.
