Sign the on-line petition against the Design Law

Stand against designer discrimination and design bureaucratization in Romania

As a follow-up of my previous post (A communist law in the making) and the discussions that occurred regarding the subject, we do have now an on-line petition [www.petitiononline.com/sdprabuz] militating against the legislative project named "Law referring to organizing and practicing design as a profession," aka "The Design Law" as proposed by SDPR.

Here is the protest, in its English version (Romanian version available as well):

We regard the design law proposed by SDPR and SDPR's intended self-appointment as the unique authority for professional designer accreditation as being an attack against the right of free association, a discriminatory practice and an impediment to design development in Romania. We repudiate the proposed law and summon designers, opinion leaders and legislators to deny any centralization and monopolization of creativity which would suffocate and subordinate the creative industries to a group of obscure interests.

If you are a graphic designer (identity designer, web designer, motion graphics artist, 3D artist, commercial artist/illustrator), industrial designer or art director working or intending to work in Romania and you think that SDPR's law means at least one of the following:

· discriminates those who do not want to be SPRD members,
· doesn't address the ethical issues of real-life design practice (free pitches and spec work, professional civility, ethical guidelines for client/project acquisition etc)
· discriminates those who practice design but do not hold a design diploma,
· SPRD's self-appointment as the unique authority for professional designer accreditation is anti-democratic,
· tries to falsely suggest that the right to signature is necessary because building a logo or a web page needs the same kind of regulation and control as building a house or a bridge,
· tries to gain control of legal tenders for design projects funded with public money,
· tries to instill in a creative industry a mechanism of communist centralization opposed to the very idea of free market economy,
· means that you'll need to ask people with a dubious reputation for the permission to work (even if you already have 5, 10 or 15 years of design career awarded with national or international prizes),

Then please sign the petition against it and spread the word. Thank you.
