Hey, Firefox!

Dreaming of world domination? Not so fast.

Firefox window: Mozilla Update. Screenshot.

Could Mozilla Update site (serving Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird) be any worse than it is, I wonder? Not that it's ugly as with that badly done aqua tabs and hideous typography, that is bearable, but look at the themes section -- it's unusable! -- you have some themes to chose from... but how?!? The is no preview, no thumbs, no button samples, no nothing! How I am supposed to make a decision? Do I have to install them all and then simply delete the ones that I do not like? Like a shoe store where I cannot see the shoes, only a brief description. I have to take a bunch of them and then return the ones that I don't like (or the ones that don't even work, and there is plenty of them -- just look at the scrollbars in the screenshot). Uh, even a junior designer would've done it better.

It is not that hard. Take a look at Mozilla's Mozdev's themes section. Almost equally ugly, maybe, but at least it works.

This is not even about design and usability, nor about the browser itself -- it's about the project's maturity. Is Firefox ready to kick MSExploder's arse? Maybe not just yet. I wish it was.
