Kitaoka, and his site is filled with this strange things he
calls 'peripheral drift illusions,' ("the peripheral drift illusion refers to
an anomalous motion illusion that can be observed in peripheral vision," he
says). The mechanisms behind them are explained in this PDF. Not that it makes any difference. (via
