Social networking services

From fly-by-wire social lubricants to business dating

Social networking services and me: no love. I tried: not even a slight trace of affinity. Nothing, zip, null.

There are people who are talented at this, a kind of techno-social geeks able and willing to pick the brains of CEO on the other side of the globe with the same ease as chatting with strangers in the park.

I played around with LinkedIn for a while and closed my account a couple of days ago (via e-mail, because there is no 'delete account' button by design). To me, it was just like a big, detailed phone book. In some lines of business the thickness of your address book may be essential. Not in mine. In design, for instance, senior-level human resources are so scarce you know almost every single one of them by name. Clients? Kidding! So I failed to learn how to do tricks with it and make it useful. Some resemblance with online dating services did cross my mind and, hell, I even saw 'sex' as a keyword in someone's areas of 'other' interests. A nice touch – who says business and pleasure cannot mix? Business dating services would be such a massive hit.

I use Flickr, but I ignore its social network side. For me Flickr is a strong, full-featured, reliable web gallery service with non-customizable, barely acceptable design.

What about you? Linked in? Passionate and hot about dot com social lubricants? No? Heavy usage too geek for you? Cold calls too cold? What, every man is an island now?
