19th Century Album of Mythological Illustrations
472 images
This collection of mythological motives and characters combines the illustrations published in several books and manuals of the second half of the 19th century (see the bibliography below).
Although a few photographs of low quality appear in these books, drawings and engravings are the main way of showing the reader the works of art treasured in far away places and museums. The (often anonymous) illustrators served an informative or instructive purpose by copying--sometimes with great accuracy--statues and other works of art. But their knowledge and workmanship produced illustrations of eloquence and character that sometimes surpass the colorful photographs of our own time.
Mythological motives from:
Alexander S. Murray, Manual of Mythology (1898)
Sir William Smith, A Smaller Classical Dictionary of Biography, Mythology, and Geography (1898)
Thomas Bulfinch, The Age of Fable or Beauties of Mythology (1898)
Gustav Schwab, Die schönsten Sagen des klassischen Altertums (1912)
