News
To stay current, you might want to visit these Web sites for MacOS related information. Some have optional paid registration where you get more archive access, etc.:
- MacSurfer.Com - links to most of the other Mac news and resource sites with brief summaries of what's new on those sites
- MacMinute.Com - lists up-to-the-minute news in the Mac world.
- MacFixIt.Com - if a software, hardware, or system problem surfaces in the Mac community, it will appear and be discussed here first.
- MacOS X Hints - this site is geared toward the more advanced MacOS X user, and it has lots of tips on using MacOS X, innovative configuration changes, troubleshooting techniques, etc. This is the first place I go when something odd occurs.
- O'Reilly's MacDevCenter - has a large archive of articles on using MacOS X. Go here for a series of articles on how to use the Terminal as a start.
- Webopedia - "The only online dictionary and search engine you need for computer and Internet technology".
Software Archives
- VersionTracker.Com - searchable archive of software for MacOS X, MacOS 9, and Windows.
- MacUpdate.Com - also a searchable resource for MacOS X software. If I have trouble finding or getting something on VT, I try this Web site.
- Apple's List of Open Source Software - links to descriptive pages for Unix utilities for MacOS X, which then link to its Web page
- SourceForge Projects
- Fink - a package manager that includes command-line tools to search, access, and install open source software. Sometimes it is the only way to get a library or development package installed.
- Fink Commander - the GUI interface to fink
- GIMP-Print - a utility that works with the MacOS CUPS (Common Unix Print System) to use open source printer drivers. I use it to networking a printer in MacOS X for my home LAN.
- Wireless Driver - while many Mac laptops come as Airport-capable (AirPort card can be installed in special slot) or with AirPort already installed, older laptops can use this driver if a compatible PC Card is available.
- Apple Older Software - A long list of links to Apple software separated by category
