96 — Monday May 23 — Revelation 1
To me, reading Revelation is like deliberately going out into a tropical storm to see what it's like. You don't go out expecting to understand everything at your leisure, you jump out, expecting to be buffeted and baffled and amazed.
It's interesting that the author didn't imagine us reading it to ourselves, but rather, like all books of his day, to be read aloud and experienced by hearers (1:3). It works better that way when you get to the visions... even within chapter 1.
I've been working on talks about the kingdom of God over the past few weeks, so it's no surprise that verses 5 and 6 struck chords in my brain this morning: "To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father -- to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. |
