'Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world' (James 1:27).
The situation now is pretty much the same as it was with liberalism in the modern era. Again, increasingly we have two groups of Christians. On the one hand are those who focus on 'looking after widows and orphans' but think it appropriate that Christianity changes as the culture around us changes. On the other hand are those who are pretty good at 'keeping themselves from being polluted by the world', but have something of a blindspot when it comes to social action against injustice.
James wants us to do both. |
