Essential 100 -- Paul not losing heart...

92 — Tuesday May 17 — 2 Corinthians 4:1 - 6:2
This 'not losing heart', this 'we are always confident' -- despite how it might appear in the letter, I don't think these come easy for Paul any more than for us. In Acts, we find several occasions where the Lord intervenes to keep Paul from despair (18:9, 27:23), but mostly it looks to me as though Paul himself is working on his own mood through passages like this.

He doesn't deny the obvious truth that he is hard-pressed, often perplexed and wasting away. But he strives to affirm over and over again the spiritual realities he also knows.

I don't know why God doesn't intervene in the lives of Christians I know who suffer from depression the way that he sometimes did for Paul. I know I could certainly use him stepping him and reassuring and reaffirming from time to time. Paul didn't have a New Testament to read; he had to write it. In these last days, perhaps that's how he intervenes.
