86 — Monday May 9 — 1 Timothy 3
It's astonishing to look at the contrast between Paul and Timothy's lofty prayers and high hopes for the community in the readings last week, particularly Friday's, and compare it with the practical rules of thumb here.
In Colossians, it seemed likely that the Spirit would transform every believer with all wisdom and understanding and here in Timothy we're looking for people with a proven track record across their lives. Young Christians, especially in our culture, will find this difficult. How can you exclude (from leadership roles) the person who is being filled with all wisdom and understanding despite their previous life?
Two things: first, westerners need to learn that not being chosen as a leader is not exclusion. Second, leadership is more about consistency and constancy than it's about brilliance. |
