85 — Friday May 6 — Colossians 1:1-23
If you were one of the people to receive the letter to the Colossians, you'd feel as though the big names have their eyes on you. Paul and Timothy are pulling out all the stops to encourage the recipients of the letter. The gospel you received is bearing fruit throughout the world (1:6) just as you remember how it was when you first came to faith (1:6, 7), and these leaders on their travels are praying for you every day (1:7).
And such prayers! All the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit can bring (1:9)! And that will enable you to grow and bear fruit and live the kind of life that pleases God (1:10).
For it is Jesus who not only prayed for you but died for you. And vv. 15-20 chart again that central paradox in Christianity: that this Jesus who is greater and higher than above any created thing should make peace for us by shedding his blood. |
