52 — Tuesday March 22 — Luke 1
What different personalities John and Luke are! Can't you just see them reading each other's work saying "You can't be seriously thinking of starting like that!" Amazing!
Another thing that struck me was that despite the differences, the gospel still begins with John the Baptist and Jesus mixed up together somehow.
And one more thing. I've frequently noticed (and commented and taught and written) about the prevalence of songs in Luke 1-2, as if the thing was some kind of West End musical... Everytime someone has something to say, cue violins off-stage. But not quite everyone. This time through it struck me that, much to my surprise, angels speak in prose. I think that holds true elsewhere as well. Isn't that a little surprising?
I also think it's interesting that Zechariah is portrayed as learning and changing. Luke is full of comparisons like the comparison of Zeke and Mary's reactions to the angels. It's encouraging that at least sometimes, even the ones who don't come off as well wind up praising God and being filled with the Holy Spirit later (1:64, 67). |
