Sarah (Cunningham) and her Dad

I'm back! Dja miss me? Here's a lovely anecdote from a book I read while away on vacation in Devon.

In this sequence, Sarah, the author, has just had some setback at College, which she was inclined to take as an Indication Of God's Will -- that she Wasn't Meant to be at uni after all. Even though Sarah's dad is a minister, he didn't interpret it that way.

Instead he asked her if she remembered Psalm 23. What a question! Does a Preacher's Kid remember "The Lord is my shepherd..." ?!!?! She started reciting it for him.

Then he asked, [and from here, I'm quoting from the book]

"'So where are you when his rod and his staff are comforting you?' ...

(I quickly repeat Psalm 23 to myself.) 'In the valley of the shadow of death?'

'And where is the table where your cup runs over?'

'Um... (repeating it again)... in the presence of my enemies?'

Thus ended another course in What They Never Taught You in Sunday School. Apparently, those 'hard times' parts of the faith had been there the whole time. The Bible-makers just subliminally blended that stuff into the memory verses to trick us into not realizing it wasn't there."

Cunningham, Dear Church, p. 134. Book available from amazon -- UK, USA.

I love that bit about the Bible-makers. I blame Zondervan for the whole mess. More about Sarah's book tomorrow.
