Since they were written so long ago, some of Ring Lardner's books and stories are now in the public domain.
It may be that you need to know a little about baseball to like it, but my favourite book has been You Know Me, Al, with its letter-style narrative and deliberate spelling and grammatical mistakes. It's available in electronic form to download as text (I transferred it to my Palm to read) or in an html interface. Well written sharp stuff from long ago. Funny, yet painfully sad too.
If and when I write fiction, I want it to be like a mixture of this and CS Lewis. |
