free Christmas music

It might be a little bit trad for some of you, but I find just enough quirkiness in Jennifer Avalon's carols. You'll find lots of free music at her web site, but you want the Sounds of Bethlehem collection for now. I think my favourite of the traditional ones is Angels We Have Heard, but I like what she's done with two that I usually find boring: O Come, O Come and We Three Kings (the version without the exploding cigar).

There are a couple of hers I'd leave out of a CD, and I'd sprinkle in some acoustic guitar instrumentals like those of Michael Silvestri for the sake of variety.

I found another collection that even I couldn't bring myself to actually download: The Border Brass's Tijuana Christmas. They're fans of the old Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass LPs, and the songs seem deliberately cheesy parodies of Tijuana Brass hits, like this deliberate reference to "Taste of Honey" in "What Child is This?" Think background music for 60s TV shows -- complete with that lamentable fake harpsichord -- and you've got the genre.
