seeking legal freeware music

I so miss the old mp3.com; it's nowhere near as good since c-net bought it, closed it, wiped all the hard discs and started again. None of the other pretenders to the throne are real winners either, but it's from one of them, purevolume, that I found As Tall As Lions. How can anyone not like punk-pop like this? They understand that the electric guitar is a percussion instrument -- the crucial thing is the excellent timing / tightness and an ability to yell tunefully and exactly on cue. The band have made two mp3 files for free downloading: Break Blossom is my favourite; there's also If I'm Not Out Burning. You can listen to a third, The Carousel, streamed from the As Tall As Lions' own website.

Currently receiving more web press than the mp3-like storehouse sites is the phenomenon of the mp3 blog, people whose blogs are nothing but daily samples of free music with indications of where you can buy more from the same bands! In theory this is great. Just find yourself a blogger or three whose tastes correspond to your own and off you go. In practice, it's not yet been as rewarding as all that for me; I've enjoyed tracking things down myself better. But here are a few mp3 blogs to get you started. 3Hive; Said the Gramophone; Royal Music; New York London Paris Munich; and The Tofu Hut. Happy hunting!
