A friend wrote and said:
Now that I am set to write two books by 1 Oct. 06 I wondered if you had any writing tips, kind of 10 things I wish I'd known before writing a book? Or the 10 irrefutable principles for new writers...
I'm afraid I still find it extremely difficult to think of myself as someone in a position to give advice about being a writer. The idea that I'm likely to produce any wisdom, given the sales figures for the stuff I've written, is absurd. Were I a betting man, I would bet that this friend of mine will sell more copies of his first book in 3 months than I have of either of mine in 2 years. Nevertheless, what blogger could resist a straight-line like that? So I've put together four or five 'principles' that I'll spin out to you over the next few days, if you promise not to take them too seriously. Different writers are completely different in their needs, methinks.
Tip number 1. Never promise to write two books by October, especially if it's October of the current year.
But no; tomorrow, my first serious point -- one about time and permission. |
