A friend of mine pointed me to a very rare beast indeed: a published book review of my Jesus Asked book. It's in the evangelical Church of England journal Anvil vol. 21, p. 213. The reviewer is a academically-minded retired Anglican priest named Gervais Angel. In his other reviews in this same issue he criticizes both Harold Hoehner and Tom Wright for their handling of the Greek, so you knew I was going to be in trouble. (He chides Harold for being "unaware that future indicative is normally interchangeable with an aorist subjunctive.")
But I'm delighted with his review of my thing. What he seems to object to most vehemently is my attitude (maybe my Greek exegesis was too hopeless for words). Here's my favourite bit: "His spoofy index, caricature of biblical characters and plentiful slang cheekily mar an otherwise brilliant product of keen biblical scholarship..."
So that's it, ladies and gentlemen of the blogsphere -- there's my new mission in life: "To cheekily mar where no scholar has cheekily marred before!"
