| It may be that the best way to work your way up to writing a real novel is not to write short things that are good and slowly work your way toward longer things, but to write long things that are bad and get better. But it's hard to have the self-discipline and to give yourself permission to write junk. |
Enter National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short). It's a self-contained, tongue-in-cheek, slight-flavour-of-deadline-and-competition pathway to writing novella-length rubbish as preparation for a real run sometime or just a way of getting it out of your system.
You can register this month, you're allowed to do plans and diagrams and stuff ahead of time, but not a word of actual text until Nov. 1.... then 50,000 words in a month alongside thousands of your brothers and sisters around the world. |
