As a family, this half-term week we've been watching two or sometimes three episodes of West Wing each evening. We finished season two and are three or four episodes into season three. I love that episode where the President and his wife get into a little argument about the sermon one Sunday morning and they actually have an intelligent conversation about Ephesians. On television!
But there's so much to love about Aaron Sorkin's writing in those episodes. The tension and squabbles between the characters are defined by their mutual respect and therefore high expectations of themselves and each other and their loyalty to the 'team.' What a welcome relief. In too many shows -- and eventually the Sorkin-less WestWing itself in later seasons -- the tensions are manufactured and arise out of petty characters pursuing their individual agendas and other people are barriers. What a huge difference.
And the recurring themes, running gags and, oh, the repartee! What I wouldn't give to be able to write like that! |
