So when I finally decided that I really could not get my marking finished in time, I simply decided that if it was good enough for major corporations, it was good enough for me. I outsourced it to India. I chose the first company on the Google search and through an internet phonecall, my new 'assistant' Ashok assured me that marking these first year essays would be no problem at all. I sent them off and relaxed.
And true to his word, he turned them around very quickly. But the grades came out astonishingly high. I had to look through the papers myself after all. I rang him. "Ashok! Only about half of these essays are marked with the marks that they deserve. The other half you've given 'A's to, even though they're not very good."
He sounded embarrassed. "Yes, sir; sorry, sir," he said. "You know there are many of us here in the company working at tables in a big room...."
"Look, if your colleagues marked half the essays," I said, "it was still your responsibility to make sure that they..."
"No, no. I was the one who marked them -- all of them," he said, "But I could not give these ones anything but top marks because I have seen how hard my colleagues worked on these essays three weeks ago when they wrote them for your students." |
