What a lucky thing for us that the oil companies have been successful at stalling the widespread acceptance of solar energy! Can you imagine the devastation if we'd all been using solar energy and an explosion of this magnitude happened on the sun!?!
I've also been trying to imagine a similar major catastrophe at a wind farm... one of those huge three-blade propellors gets loose and tries to take off like an aeroplane. When it hits the ground, the thud would be audible for literally meters. It will have chucked whole bucketloads of dirt and loose debris some feet into the atmosphere. Anyone under the blade at the time would be unlikely to survive the impact, of course, but, more subtly, anyone lying on ground for some distance around could have inhaled potentially toxic or at least mildly disgusting particulates. That is, unless they were breathing through their noses at the time or able to hold their breath for a few seconds. |
