The Healing Waters Workshop:
Instructor training in Aquatic Exercise for People with Special Needs

People with injuries or chronic diseases such as arthritis or fibromyalgia benefit from regular exercise. However, fatigue, pain, and fear of pain often limit their participation in exercise programs. These special populations respond very well to activity in the pool. This practical workshop explores the characteristics of several conditions requiring adapted aquatic exercise. The benefits of aquatic activity, class design, and facility programming issues for these special populations will be explored. Practical activities in a warm-water pool are included. ( a warm pool is required for this session – high 80s to mid 90s F.

People with conditions that often do not respond well to typical land-based therapies can benefit from warm water exercise. The resistive, assistive, and supportive properties of the water are ideal for:
  • Surgical post-rehabilitation: joint replacements and repairs
  • Pre-surgical conditioning
  • Orthopedic and rheumatologic conditions such as: fibromyalgia and arthritis
  • Athletic injuries: shoulder, knee, ankle
  • Neck and back pain; weight bearing issues
  • Motor vehicle accident or other musculo-skeletal injuries: acute, sub-acute and chronic

Improved exercise adherence and quality of life result from regular warm-water therapies.
Aquatic rehabilitation offers a number of specific benefits, including: reduced gravity, lack of eccentric work, improved circulation, decreased tactile sensitivity, increased relaxation response, and increased pain threshold. Aquatic resistance is omni-directional and infinitely adjustable to client ability. The water cushions joints and supports the body while it challenges and trains balance and core stability.

On medical advice, and as a follow-up to medical care, warm water exercise promotes mobility and healing.
