DESCRIPTION

Yo, obviously, you like motion pictures, or you wouldn't be here. But motion pictures themselves would not be here (or anywhere) if we humans weren't so easy to trick into thinking we see motion. From the zoetrope to 24p hi-def TV, NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON'T explores flicker fusion and the phi phenomenon - the very phenomena that moving images exploit. Read up on the theory, see examples of some types of motion, get the lowdown on film vs. video (when it comes to this stuff, at least), and enjoy some cool examples of how frame rate and motion blur affect the quality of the illusion of motion.

This project was done as an independent study with Professor David Parry at Temple in the fall of 2001. So no, even though I find this kind of stuff interesting, I'm not quite dorky enough to do this thing on my own. Ha ha ha. Anyway, enjoy the show.

MAC OS X BROTHERS AND SISTERS: Maybe it's just me, but I can't get the Shockwave QuickTime Xtra to work with the OS X player. Looks like you're going to have to boot into OS 9 or go visit someone who's been brainwashed by the Dell guy to see the motion blur and frame rate examples.
