Vasquez Rocks!
Where Capt. Kirk fought the
Gorn!
It has been getting darn cold here lately. And by
darn cold I mean into the lower 50s and upper 40s. Not that cold for most of
you, but for us in LA, used to 70+ degree weather in January...it has been
nippy. And it has been raining quite a bit. Knowing that cold weather and rain
down here means colder weather and snow in dem dar hills, we set out for another
fun filled day in the snow. The last time we went we had such a blast. And it
was if we were meant to go. I forgot to mention that on the way up, we found
that orange plastic toboggan you see pictured on the side of the road. In
perfect condition. So off north we drove, snow gear in the
boot.
But we get about 15 minutes out of town when we see a big electronic sign saying that our favorite snow play area, Frazier Park, was closed. CLOSED! Man! There must be too much snow up there. So much snow that they couldn't get them plowed in time. Picture it...all that nice fresh white powder. We were all very disappointed.
Sam mentioned that she knew of that there was snow in this one town not to far from where we were. We were supposed to be selling Girl Scout Cookies this weekend, but the lady who has the cookies said that she couldn't get down to LA because she was snowed in. So we headed up that way for a day in the snow. But when we got there...there was no snow. No REAL snow anyway. Spatterings here and there, but nothing serious. We try to drive up some dirt road, but the snow doesn't look good. So we turn back. The girls are all disappointed...as were I and Sam.
Now on the way up, we passed some really neat rock formations. Sideways jutting things. Very cool.
Now...I know I had seen these rocks before. In an instant I knew where. STAR TREK! The original series, with Kirk, Spock and McCoy. The big three. Well, one episode of Star Trek was shot here. A rather famous one. The one where Kirk fought the captain of an alien craft...a giant humanoid known as a Gorn. Kirk had to defeat him with the elements found in that area. They also shot BILL AND TEDS BOGUS JOURNEY and THE FLINTSTONES there. But really it was the TREK episode that drew me in.
So I suggested that we go there. Everyone was all for it, being bored and not wanting to spend another day hanging about the house.
We get there. We climb. We explore. We have a grand old time. The girls want to climb to the top of peak, but Sam had to hang back with Kaia, and I was outnumbered, having to watch both girls. And Hallies shoes really weren't meant for climbing. To their credit, my girls are FANTASTIC climbers...even in bad shoes. And they really wanted to go to the top peak. They got halfway up the final leg when I insisted they come down. It wasn't safe. I couldn't risk it. It was just to darn dangerous. They were REALLY disappointed. They knew they could climb it...and I knew they could too, but...it wasn't safe. I really wanted them to too...but...not safe.
Maybe next time. We will be going back...this is our new favorite place. Oh, and I video of our exploits up very soon. Next day or two.
