The Sandbo Family Hans Knutsson Sandbo (1861-1948)
Hans Knutsson Sandbo first came to America in 1878 from the Lillesandbu farm in the town of Kvam, Nordre Fron, Oppland, Norway. From the various dates of birth for the children and other evidence, what seems most likely is that Hans was sent to America by his family to find a place to settle and then send for his father and siblings. Hans does not appear in the 1880 U.S. census, but church records in Kvam show that he left for America in 1878. It also is recorded that his father, Knut Hansson Lillesandbu, sold the Lillesandbu farm in 1880 to a man named Ole Kristoffersen Sletten for 3200 Kronermoney which almost certainly financed the family’s emigration.
Upon their immigration the family chose to shorten their farm-based surname from Lillesandbu to Sandbo (which suggests the pronunciation of Sandbu in Norwegian is close to the English pronunciation of Sandbo, at least in 19th century dialects).
Hans’ father Knut Hansson Lillesandbu (1828-1885) was born in Kvam, Nord-Fron, Oppland, Norway. Norwegian records show that Knut and his wife Anne Hansdotter Teigen had six children, one of whom died before his first birthday and before the family emigrated. Only two of the boys survived to adulthood, both of whom are identified as Hans Knutsson Lillesandbu in the Kvam church records. The younger brother was known as Henry later in life.
When Hans Knutsson Sandbo came to America, family history reports he stayed with a family by the name of Myrom. The Myroms were from the area near Kvam, as were a number of other immigrants in the Milan and Watson communities. Hans Sandbo apparently remained friendly with the Myrom family, and one of the earliest known photograph of Hans and Marit’s children (the very young Clara and infant Anne) was taken with a couple identified as the Myroms.
It was probably in the early 1880s when Hans began courting Marit Olsdatter Volden, who also was from Kvam from the Klevstadvolden farm. The Volden family arrived in Kragero township (near Milan) at about the same time as Hans and they had settled along the southern shores of Lac Qui Parle. Oddly, some members of that family from the Klevstadvolden farm took the surname Klevstad and others Volden, even among siblings. There may have been a somewhat logical reason for this, but the most obviously choice to a modern eye is that the choice was simply personal preference. While it is possible Hans and Marit were acquainted and possibly even courting prior to their immigration, the facts of their courtship are not known. Hans and Marit were married December 6, 1884.
Hans Sandbo purchased his family’s new home in 1881, where he and Marit raised their family. The land purchased was large enough to support several homes, and census records show that Hans and Marit’s immediate neighbors were his parents and also his younger brother Henry, a true Norwegian bachelor farmer.
Hans Sandbo was a somewhat important and respected member of his community as he grew older. He was a member of Milan’s Zion Lutheran Church, and he served that congregation as its secretary for about forty years. He was very active in civic affairs and served as clerk in school district No. 68, as county commissioner of Chippewa county and as a member of the Riverside sanatorium board, besides being an assessor in Kragero township for a number of years. Politically he was a Republican and served as a delegate to county, congressional and state political conventions many times.
The Ancestry of Hans Knutson Sandbo
Thanks in part to distant cousins from Norway, we know a great deal about Hans’ ancestry. Hans’ father Knut Hansson was born on the Lillesandbu farm July 15, 1828. His descendants are listed following this report. His paternal ancestry includes families from Ringebu, a town about 20 miles south of Kvam, including residents of the Tofte, Bay, Wålen, and Romsås farms.
Hans' grandfather was Hans Knutsson Brandstad, born January 15, 1800 in the town of Ringebu at Brandstad farm. Hans Knutsson lived to the age to 92 and was married twice. His first wife, Guro Hansdotter Teigen (1805-1840) had six children, although only the eldest three survived to adulthood. They were married October 25, 1827. His second wife was Kari Monsdatter Kjaestad (b.1827) by whom Hans had one daughter.
Hans Sandbo’s great-grandfather was Knut Hansson Breden (1774-1831). He appears on the 1801 census as living on the Brandstad farm in Ringebu with his wife, Anne Gulbrandsdotter (1773-1837). We know they had at least five children, one girl and four boys (one of whom died in childhood). It also appears from that 1801 census data that Knut Hansson probably came to live with Anne and her family following their marriage, because also on the Brandstad farm were Anne’s parents Gulbrand Pedersen (b.1742) and Marit Neilsdatter (b.1745).
Knut Hansson Breden's direct male ancestors lived north of Kvam in the community of Sel, Vågå, Oppland, for at least eight generations on the Breden farm. The earliest ancestor currently known is Jakob Frederickson Breden (1605-1665) who married Mari Syversdotter Kleppe.
On his mother’s side, Hans K. Sandbo is a descendant of the large and prolific Teigen clan from the Teigen farm in Kvam, Nord-Fron, Oppland, Norway. Also in his maternal ancestry are residents of the Hågenstuen, Sonstebo, and Myhre farms in the Kvam kommune.
