The S.S. Helka - Baard OdegardThis is a photograph of the vessel which brought the immigrant Baard Baardsen Odegard from Kristiansund, Norway to the United States. Inset is a sample luggage tag from that vessel. The second vessel with this name was part of the Danish Thingvalla shipping line. The vessel loaded passengers (including Baard Odegard), wood pulp and 15 barrels of fish oil in Kristiansund port on April 18, 1889. Arrived at the port of New York May 4, 1889. Photographers unknown. This is the official Thingvalla line photograph of the ship, and the luggage tag was found on a beach in the New York area and donated to an area immigration museum. |

The S.S. Sofia - Charlie SciandraThis is a rendering of the vessel which brought the immigrant Calogero "Charlie" Sciandra (1895-1958) from Sicily to the United States. Arrived at the port of New York on February 3, 1921. Built in 1905, it was originally named the Sofia Hohenberg. She made eleven voyages from Italy to the United States before being used for South American service with Italy in late 1907. The vessel was used as a troop transport by Italy during the first world war. Following the war, the Sofia made a single passenger voyage to the United Stated in January of 1921. The vessel was scrapped in 1929. Illustrator unknown. |

Arrived at the port of New York May 12, 1888. This is the last known and verified location of John Baardsen, elder brother to Baard Baardsen Odegard. Photographers unknown.
