How to Use the Genealogy Lists

To find an individual in these lists, find the menu option Surnames and click on the name. This will take you the beginning of that alphabetical listing in the full list of names. Scroll down, or use the navigation buttons to find the individual. Clicking on the name will take you to the full report for that individual. From there, you can again click on any name to be taken to the next individual. If you have other questions or comments about the page, please contact me at codegard@mac.com. The lists and reports were generated using a software package called Heredis at www.myheredis.com. Suggestions for improvements would be most welcome.

Another good place to start is the My Ancestors page, which gives a generation-by-generation list of all of Sonje's known ancestors. This list includes links to the individual description pages. Simply click on the desired name to go to that individual's full description.

There are notes and comments throughout the individuals lists. The large A graphic indicates the individual is a direct ancestor of Sonje’s. The notation [s] indicates a link to a source. This site is under construction and my research is just beginning. Some of the sources listed are not very authoritative and I intend to improve that over time. I have decided to include much information without sources as it represents the research of others, and while it may not be completely reliable, it does present likely information which I intend to improve upon and verify as this project continues.

The Map Room

The Map Room gives general information about certain family members at key times, such as immigration to the United States. Creating maps like these for every ancestor would be exhausting. However, as I refine my research over time, I intend to add additional, more detailed maps.

People and Places

These pages include photos of family members, as well as of homes and other locations related to our family's history in the United States and abroad. There are also a select few pictures of historical documents, and even a few of the ships which brought some of our ancestors to North America. For this collection I would especially like to encourage contributions or suggestions for what else might be included here. I have begun to publish articles on various individual ancestors, and these are included on the People & Places page, as well. These articles include highlights of specific key ancestors, and a brief overview of their descendants. Other articles cover areas of historic interest, the first of these in on Scandinavian naming conventions. I am hoping to expand upon this section as time permits.

Family Trees

The Family Trees page shows simplified ancestral tree diagrams beginning with Sonje Ruth Odegard. Certain names are highlighted and underlined, indicating a link to another tree with earlier ancestry. Located at the top of the page are some names listed as Non-Ancestral Trees which link to diagrams of the ancestry for some cousins whose ancestry has been researched and included in the family database.

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank my family and the many other people who helped me gather the information presented on this site. You have endured my questions and suffered the enthusiasm of new discoveries. I began this project in February of 2004 and expect it will never be fully completed, because I do not yet even know all the right questions, much less the right answers. I invite you all to contribute information, make suggestions for improvements, and also to tell me: "Enough already about the family history."

I would also like to thank the many individuals and organizations who have made resources available free of charge to aid my research. Some of my information has come from the hard work of other families, which I have borrowed for publication on this site. Where I have borrowed more than a date or two, I have tried to list these sites as formal sources. Also invaluable have been some of the online repositories of historical information, especially the various elements of the GenWeb project in the United States, the Our Roots project of Canada, and the Digitalarkivet of Norway. Many distant cousins have done reseach which dovetails with my own, and their work has contributed immeasurably to this body of work. For their efforts and academic generosity, I would like to specifically thank: Tor Teigen, Nils Tores Leivdal, Tor Onshus, James R. Hume, Klaus Dufner, the Alm Family, Asbjørn Klomstad, David Payne-Joyce, Lloyd Anderson, as well as the Clan Campbell Society among others.

Certain individuals have been especially helpful in collecting images and information for this project. I would like to specifically mention: Pat & Paul Sciandra, Barb & Dave Odegard, Maxine Childers, Hans Sandbo, Mark Odegard, Billie Hume, Doug Gent, Mark Long, Sue Strand, Jack Dringenberg and Doug Laurie for your time and interest.

I would also like to thank Kate and Sonje for their love and patience.
