Welcome to the
Instrumental Music Program at Century middle School.
Century Middle School is very proud of the instrumental
music program and all of it has to offer. Beginning band is
the first step in participating in this great program!
Beginning Band (Woodwinds, Brass or Percussion)
CMS is excited to provide students with an opportunity to
play in the band program. In this class, the students learn
to perform on woodwind, brass or percussion instruments.
Students will not be starting percussion until the second
half of the year and will be placed off of grades and
participation on their first instrument. In addition,
students will learn how to read music and the techniques
for performing in a large ensemble. A variety of musical
styles are introduced. No previous experience is necessary.
Students will learn to play and maintain their instruments,
which may be purchased or rented (see the "Music Stores
Page" on this website). Students will perform several
concerts throughout the school year. Successful completion
of this beginning course will prepare students for the
opportunity to pursue Intermediate Band in their 2nd year
of playing.
Top Questions:
What instruments can the students
pick from?
What do the students do in class
before they get their instruments?
How do I rent or purchase an
instrument?
Where are the instruments stored?
-Students are given band lockers for instruments that are
too large to be stored in their school locker.
Do Students Have to practice every night?
-Students are required to practice 100 minutes a week. This
can be done 5 nights of 20 min each (recommended), or any
other increment, although, it is not recommended to
practice more that 30 min at a time. Students will log this
time in their method books which will need to be signed
weekly by the parents.
Should my student take private lessons?
-If able, private lessons are the best way to excel at a
musical instrument. There is a wide range of teachers in
price range and experience. We have a list of recommended private
teachers that you can refer to.
Please Refer to the handbook and
it has all the information that you might need to know
about the program and the expectations of the
students!
