February
18th, 2009Dear Jazz Ensemble/Band Parents and Students;
The Jazz Ensemble did a great job at the Mile High Festival last week and we would now like to focus on our next big festival, the UNC Jazz Festival. The UNC Jazz Festival is the biggest festival of its kind in the US! In addition to hundreds of groups ranging from elementary to University levels, the festival has outstanding concerts which we will take advantage of. This letter is to inform you about this festival which will be on Friday and Saturday, April 24th and 25th , 2009. Instead of writing you a terribly long letter, I have decide to write down some basic facts and give you the links to the festival so that you can check it out on your own.
Here is what you will need to know about the UNC Jazz Festival:
-Both the Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble will be performing on Saturday between 9am and noon. (Times TBD)
- The UNC Jazz Festival is at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley Colorado
-We plan on going to the Friday evening concert featuring:
The Mingus Big Band
Maynard Ferguson Tribute with Concord Recording Artist Wayne Bergeron with UNC Jazz Lab Band I
the concert will not get over until about 10pm and instead of getting back at 11:30pm and having to miss more of school on Friday by performing on Friday, we are going to stay at a local hotel in Greeley (TBD once plans are finalized) and have both groups perform on Saturday Morning between 9am and Noon.
- We will be leaving Century at 2:30 P.M. on Friday April 24th. This will allow us to check into our hotel, eat dinner and unwind before the concert. The concert begins at 7:30pm and lasts until about 10pm. We will then go back to the hotel. We will wake up the next morning and have breakfast and then both groups will perform between 9am and Noon and we will return to Century on Saturday in the early afternoon.
-COST: while the school is picking up a substantial part of the cost to make it affordable by paying entrance fees. Students will need to pay for their individual costs such as the room $25, the concert tickets $25, transportation $25, and meals and spending money (I recommend an additional $25) so roughly $100 total. There are some funds available for students in need, please contact Mr Crump-Bertram for information.
-Rooms-Students will be sharing rooms with four other students (All Boys or All Girls). Rooms do have two queen beds in each room.
- Students will need to bring money or a sack lunch for dinner on Friday. Students should bring only the essential items that they need for the Trip, concert clothes, other clothes and essentials, and possibly swim suit for the hotel etc... I am asking that the students not bring mp3 players, ipods and hand held game boys, if they do, they will need to be responsible for them at all times.
- Parents are always welcome on our field trips! If you can drive or would like to ride the bus and stay with us, please let me know as soon as possible.
- Students performing will need to wear concert black for the performances.
- After our performance each group will go to a clinic, group pictures will be taken and will be available for purchase. More details as far as the cost of these pictures will be given to the students at that time.
- Flesher Hinton Music will have displays of music and instruments in the lobby area. Students may purchase music, compact disks and accessories from Flesher Hinton Music. Really cool festival T-shirts will also be available for purchase. These shirts sold last year for $15.00 and should be about the same price this year.
