MARIACHI

The Crusader Mariachi rehearses all school year and performs at a variety events. This group is made up of primarily 7th and 8th grade orchestra members who play guitars, guitarrones, vihuela, trumpet, and violin. Someone usually volunteers to sing, and last year we were lucky to have a dancer perform for our spring concert. However, any student may participate who wants to learn. Several years ago we even had a home schooled student attend for our rehearsals.

Curran Middle School's most distinguished music graduate has been a long time enthusiast of Mariachi music. Dr. Daniel Sheehy, an ethnomusicologist, has been an inspiration and motivation for our program and the students to whom he has spoken.

More information about our school district mariachi activities is available at the Bakersfield City School District web site.  Click here for recent pictures of the district sponsored participation in the Fresno Mariachi Festival workshops.

In 2004, efforts to recognize and support mariachi education were endorsed by the National Association for Music Education (MENC). Please take time to visit their website to join in the mariachi community's enthusiasm and participation in this wonderful tradition at this page on their website.
