Connecting
the Walking Program with the Health Program
• Human Body- Health is where the human body is primarily taught. A Pedometer/
walking program can be used to make Human Body connections to the skeleton, muscles,
respiratory, circulatory systems.
• Disease – How does exercise affect disease of the Human Body? Can
it prevent disease or help disease?
• Nutrition- pedometers count calories – science explanation and
concrete way for students to see calories being counted.
• Nutrition, Diet and Exercise – Obesity
• Self esteem - Physical activity that is non competitive and does not
cost family a lot of money
• Family activity – parental support to enlist.
• School Enthusiasm – the more role models the more children will
feel the impact, the importance of wellness, exercise.
• A global approach statistically changes lifestyle.
• Connections to language arts, social studies, math and the website
• Walk across America, Walk across America! (an example of a successful
social studies activity)

Why Pedometers? • Pedometer walking programs are showcased at educational
conferences because they work.
• Pedometers reinforce math skills. Reinforced math skills affect CMT scores.
• Pedometer programs also can enrich Social Studies and Geography as children
walk across a state or the United States.
• Children count steps individually and as a class/group. Progress is discussed
and major math concepts are reinforced. Counting as well as miles
and percentages.
• Pedometers integrate technology.
• Pedometers reach some students who need concrete visual results.
• Pedometers are a positive effective tool that motivates students
• In many other school systems pedometers are used by classroom teachers
as well.
• Health and Wellness crosses over into all subject areas as does most
content areas. Computers are reinforced throughout all disciplines
as are language arts, math, the creative arts etc. By having children experience
pedometers in other classes besides
just PE it reinforces math skills as well as motivates children from
another role model and integrated learning
• The walking program in health class will cover integrated but different
information the children will not get in PE class. Examples Include:
• Journaling experiences
• Related information to the Human Body, Nutrition, Exercise, Math, Social
Studies and Self Esteem Topics
